What’s in the Lisboa Card and Pena Palace combo

The combo comes with the 24, 48 or 72-hour card. Inside are the card, the palace-and-park ticket, the two audio guides and a code worth 10% off your later Tiqets bookings in Lisbon.

Separately, the card and the Pena ticket cost less with any length of card. The audio guides tip it the other way: bought on their own, the two cost more than that difference, so for anyone who wants both, the combo comes out slightly ahead.

Without the audio guides, buy the card and your Pena Palace tickets separately. The Lisboa Card’s own 10% discount at Pena only works at the palace ticket desk, and Pena’s tickets are timed and limited, so on a busy day it’s safer to book yours ahead.

Pena Palace, Ferdinand II’s palace on the hill

The palace itself was the project of Ferdinand II, a German prince who married Portugal’s Queen Maria II and became known as the “artist-king”.

In 1838 he bought the hilltop’s 16th-century monastery, damaged by the 1755 earthquake and empty since Portugal closed its monasteries, and turned it into his palace.

It looks medieval, but it’s a 19th-century creation. Baron von Eschwege, a mineralogist and mining engineer, ran the works, and Ferdinand is believed to have designed the Triton over the entrance himself.

Inside, a fixed route takes you through the royal rooms, and the terraces outside have the views. The park below spreads over the hill, on the same ticket. At its far end stands the chalet of the Countess of Edla, the opera singer who became Ferdinand’s second wife.

Since 1995 it’s all been part of UNESCO’s Cultural Landscape of Sintra.

From Lisbon to Pena Palace with the Lisboa Card

The card covers the train from Rossio to Sintra, both ways. From Sintra station, the 434 bus climbs to the palace, though it’s a separate fare.

From the park gate, it’s then about 30 minutes’ walk uphill to the palace door, or a ride on the park’s own shuttle.

The time on your ticket is for the palace door, and it’s kept strictly, so pick one that leaves room for the train, the bus and the climb.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pena Palace included in the Lisboa Card, or is it just a discount?

Not on the card alone, whether you call it the Lisboa Card or the Lisbon Card. The card takes 10% off Pena Palace tickets, but only at the palace ticket desk. It does cover the train to Sintra and back, and the combo adds the Pena ticket itself.

Does the combo cover the bus up to Pena?

No. The 434 bus from Sintra station to the palace is a separate fare, outside both the card and the combo. You can also walk up from the town on one of three marked trails, all uphill, from about 45 minutes to an hour and a half.

Can I cancel the Lisboa Card + Pena combo?

This combo can't be cancelled. If your plans might change, buy the card alone: you can cancel it until the day you chose.
